What are the parts of the stern tube?

Stern tube is a section of pipe fixed at the stern of a ship to allow the shaft to pass through and provided with a seal and support device. The components of the stern tube are generally divided into bearings, sealing devices, cooling water systems, lubricating oil systems, exhaust pipes and sewage outlets.

Bearings: Bearings are the core components of the stern tube, used to support and protect the shafting, and to withstand axial and radial loads. According to different ship types and design requirements, bearings can be used in different forms such as plain bearings, rolling bearings and hydraulic bearings.

Sealing device: Sealing device is an important part to prevent the leakage of lubricating oil and other media. According to the different sealing medium and pressure, the sealing device can be divided into oil lubricated rubber ring seal and air lubricated rubber ring seal.

Cooling water system: In order to prevent bearings and other components from overheating, it is usually necessary to set up a cooling water system. The cooling water system can pass water or other cooling media through bearings and other parts to take away heat and recycle it.

Lubricating oil system: In order to reduce friction and wear, bearings and other transmission components need to be lubricated regularly. The lubricating oil system can transport the lubricating oil to each lubrication point through the oil pump to ensure the normal operation of the components.

Exhaust pipe and sewage outlet: In order to remove exhaust gas and sewage in time, the stern pipe is usually equipped with exhaust pipe and sewage outlet. The exhaust pipe can discharge the exhaust gas out of the ship, while the sewage outlet can discharge the sewage overboard or into a specialized sewage treatment system.
